DJ Simpson:

COMMA 08
11 June - 18 July 2009

DJ Simpson is a painter who refers to his own work as 'drawing with electricity.' For Bloomberg SPACE, he covered the surfaces of the rear gallery with his Rococo style grey tone wallpaper, punctuated by a series of new engraved mirror pieces. With a nod to the Baroque master Tiepolo, Simpson's intricate wall paper design was mechanically produced with raised surface printing. Its spiralling ellipses and shifting backdrop of dappled tonal grey discs transformed the rear gallery creating an intimate almost domestic space.

Using wallpaper marked a new departure for Simpson, who is best known for his large scale paintings which reference grand works from the Abstract Expressionist canon, whose influence resonate playfully throughout his work. The routered works commissioned for Bloomberg SPACE were also a new development for Simpson who experimented with using partially mirrored perspex resulting in complex broken surfaces of mirror ground and non-reflective routered mark.

DJ Simpson (b. Lancaster, UK 1966) lives and works in London.
